Streamlining Your Space: A Guide to Decluttering Paper, Pens, and Phones

You might wonder why this is important. These items seem small and may not significantly impact the overall appearance of a room or your home. However, I believe that achieving quick wins can boost your confidence and motivate you to tackle additional tasks. Plus, small decluttering efforts accumulate over time, and soon you'll find yourself with more space and a greater sense of control.

Let's start with Pens, Pencils, Markers and Highlighters

Go around your house and gather these all up. Check if each pen works. If it doesn’t, it’s time to let it go! For pencils, sharpen the ones worth saving.

Decide how many pens and pencils you actually need. Place them in designated spots. Declutters normally talking about grouping in one place but for these it's handy, having them in different areas for convenience.

Then, let's move on to paper items - this is a slightly bigger task

  1. Go through your notepads and scraps of paper. If they won’t be used again, throw them.

  2. Review your magazines and newspapers. Keep only the key articles that are meaningful to you. Most publications have a "sell by" date, so if they’re outdated, it’s best to recycle them.

  3. Look through your old Christmas and birthday cards. Christmas cards can be cut into tags for future use, but generally, most cards can be discarded.

  4. Have a look at your collection of takeaway menus. Are there duplicates that can be discarded. Do you need to keep any?

  5. Review your receipts and consider if it’s necessary to keep it. If yes, file, if not shred and discard.

As I sit here writing this blog I am facing a shelf full of Recipe Books - I've not opened some for years!. As you may find yourself flicking through the recipe books, which takes time, my suggestion is you diarise this to carry out this task when you can focus on what you want to keep.

Now we are going to move on to old Mobile Phones and Chargers

Old mobile phones and chargers can be left in drawers etc without us consciously thinking about it. I've found old ones in different drawers in my house. So, the final tip for today is to check for old devices and chargers that you no longer use.

If you want to dispose of an old phone responsibly, consider researching options for recycling or donating it. Many organizations accept used phones and can provide useful advice on how to prepare your phone for donation. I came across this site which seems to give some good advice - What to do with old mobile phones and chargers in UK - T&M Reuse

By following these steps, you will be creating a more organised home.

Enjoy the process and the freedom of a tidier home!
