Every year, over 250,000 individuals aged 65 and older sustain injuries from tripping, falling and injuring themselves in their homes. This alarming statistic highlights a significant issue that the NHS is grappling with, as unnecessary injuries place an additional strain on healthcare resources.
The Impact of Home Safety
Getting hurt at home is not just an inconvenience; it can lead to severe injuries, including fractures, head trauma etc. It’s vital to address these risks, not only for the well-being of seniors but also to alleviate pressure on our healthcare system.
Simplifying the Home
One effective way to reduce the risk of harm within the home is to simplify the living space. Here are some practical steps to consider:
Declutter: Remove unnecessary items from floors, stairs, and walkways. Clutter can easily become a tripping hazard.
Organise: Keep frequently used items within easy reach to avoid stretching or bending awkwardly. Keep piles to a safe height. This may sound obvious, but lots of people that have piles of things that are at a dangerous level.
Improve Lighting: Ensure all areas are well-lit, especially staircases and hallways. Consider installing motion-sensor lights for convenience.
Secure Rugs: Use non-slip mats or remove rugs altogether to prevent slipping.
Install Handrails: Add handrails on stairs and in bathrooms to provide extra support.
