Around 25% of people over the age of 55 choose to downsize their homes. The task of reducing your items is a big one and therefore I'd like to share my top tips to help you.
Rather than jumping straight to sorting through your items, the first thing I'd encourage you to do is to produce a high level description of your current property (e.g. 4 bedrooms, garage, garden etc) and then list out the type of property you would be looking to move into.
As well as the new size of the property, consider whether you would like to move into a property of a similar style and whether your items, and especially your furniture is likely to fit in it and look as good as it does now.
If you do not think you will have a garden going forward/or will not need as many beds etc, start making an itinerary of anything that can go. Take photographs of the items. You will then have the information at hand to share with others, to see if they would want the items. For larger pieces, charities such as St. Christophers will come and pick up items they can sell in their shops. They will want to see photographs upfront.
If you know that you will need to get rid of soft furnishing such as a sofa, please be aware that they will need to have the fire label attached to them, for a charity to take them.
Once you know what furniture will go and what will stay, you are now in the position to consider your new home. Measure and take photographs of your furniture so that you can visualise it in a new room and check that it will fit. It is not just the room that we need to think about but also the access route to moving furniture in. Will the removal people be able to get your furniture into a chosen room.
Next week I will move onto sorting through your clothes.
If you would like support in sorting through your possessions, please do get in touch.
