Case Study:  The Forgotten Corner

Forgotten Corner

You might be thinking,  Vicki cannot make everything disappear

The Situation

My client and her family had been living in this property for a few years and due to life being hectic, this corner became somewhere things were thrown.  The thought at the time was to deal with them at a different time.  The more there was in the pile the easier it was to put more things on top.

Messy corners

The Decision to seek help

My client was starting to get really frustrated with the area.   Not only was this clutter taking up floor space, it was also stopping her getting to storage areas.  It also meant that a ledge (not shown in the picture) also became an area of disarray as it couldn't be reached easily.   My client had been putting off this task for quite a while and by hiring a Professional Organiser she knew it could change.

Setting Goals

I asked my client the question of 'what does good look like' and she said a cleared floor.  I never assume anything as It is the clients choice.

The Decluttering Process

As we began sorting through a variety of plastic bags, it quickly became clear that many items were no longer needed. My client shared memories of her past life working in the City, where she dressed accordingly but no longer wore those clothes.

Among the bags, we discovered beauty and hair products that were either expired or no longer useful. Additionally, there were bags filled with items intended for charity that had never made it there.

To encourage action, we placed the charity bags in a central location in the room, making them inconveniently visible. This significant pile motivated my client to take the items to the charity shop.

While sorting through the bags, I came across various pieces of jewellery. When I casually showed her a box containing a ring, I was unprepared for her reaction. She was ecstatic—it turned out to be her wedding ring, which had been cut off due to swelling during her pregnancy. Her joy was clear, and it was incredibly rewarding to help her find this cherished item.

The Outcome

Here’s a picture of the famous lost ring and how the room looked at the end.

Ultimately, there were many charity items in the pile, while other items were organised with similar ones in the nearby storage area.

I left the client with a happy smile, knowing that she and her husband were overjoyed
